When you walk into the Museum area of the Library, you cross a replica of the great Seal of the President of the United States. Our conference will be held in a replica of the East Room of the White House, where Abigail Adams, the first First Lady to reside in the White House, hung the family laundry on clotheslines across the East Room, commenting, "The house is made habitable, but there is not a single fence, yard or other convenience.... to hang up the clothes in." Two "Ten Plate" stoves, according to the White House inventory of February 26, 1801, helped the drying.
